The transmission connector is located on the passenger side of the 4L60E transmission housing and on the driver side of the 4L80E transmission housing. The vehicle speed sensor is located in the tail shaft housing on the passenger side.
Locate the speed sensor. The sensor is found on the bottom of the transmission and can be identified as a small plug that is sticking straight out of the transmission with an electrical connector plugged into it.
The 4L60-E transmission uses a vehicle speed sensor mounted to the transmission (or transfer case on 4X4 units). Mounted to the output shaft is a 40 toothed wheel. As the output shaft rotates, an AC signal is created. This signal is sent to a VSS buffer on all nonpassenger-car applications.
There are generally two speed sensors that work in conjunction to provide accurate transmission data to the vehicle’s powertrain control module.
Can you drive with a bad speed sensor? In general, it is unsafe to drive a vehicle with a broken wheel speed sensor. The car’s computer will not be able to determine the speed that your vehicle is traveling, so it might apply the brakes at a faster rate than necessary or increase the engine power.
If you noticed, I’ve used the words, transmission speed sensor and vehicle speed sensor so far. The only difference between the two is what the manufacturer decides to call it. In either case, the faster the transmission output shaft moves, the more voltage the sensor produces.
The vehicle speed sensor is one of the easiest parts on your car to change yourself. … If you notice that the speedometer does not work any longer, replace the vehicle speed sensor as it is the most likely cause.
bad speed sensor alone will not cause trans to go into limp mode.
To answer your original question, yes you do need vss signal for the pcm to control the trans.
Re: 4L60E/241C info
As far as I know (I’m not a 4×4 guy, but I pick up stuff along the way), you can start with a 2wd 4l60e if your going to the 241 tc, since you need to change the output shaft either way. If you stuck with the 205, the starting with a 4wd 4l60e would be easier because you could just bolt it up.
Will disconnecting the battery reset TCM? Simply disconnecting the battery would not return the TCM to its default settings, you would need to use a transmission scan method to do so. Disconnecting the battery terminals will not complete the phase or solve any gear shift issue.
It records the driving style, usually by looking at the last 40 shift points and adjusts so the car shifts accordingly to your style. It does this by monitoring different sensors such as the throttle or the gas pedal input and more. In other words, it learns your driving style.
Removing a wheel speed sensor will disable ABS—and sometimes, stability control. If your car has a yaw sensor, you can unplug that for results. You can also try simply unplugging the ABS module, though that could adversely affect your car’s braking performance.
Occasionally, these sensors can fail or become faulty working intermittently sending inaccurate signals to the ECU. In your case it may be possible that the transmission is receiving a faulty signal from the ABS system.
If it’s the wheel speed sensors (like for the ABS) the car will run but the ABS system won’t be able to do its job. If we’re talking about any engine sensors, the engine MIGHT still run, but it will likely run poorly or throw a check engine light.
A failing transmission position sensor may no longer send the right signals to the Powertrain Control Module, or PCM. Without signals from the position sensor, the PCM will no longer know when to shift the transmission’s gears out of park into a moving gear. Transmission shifts into the wrong gear.
The Transmission Range Sensor tells the PCM the position of the transmission shifter. The PCM uses this information to control which gears of the transmission to enable or disable. When the TR sensor fails it can cause wrong gear starts, no upshifts, or what feels like a falling-out-of-gear condition.
Most experienced technicians can replace the transmission speed sensor within 2-3 hours. Depending on the severity of the damage it can take a bit longer.
Since any engine requires the correct air to fuel ratio and ignition timing to start, having a faulty sensor that can’t adjust these symptoms on the fly can cause the engine to not start. … Faulty sensors can keep your engine from starting, but this is often engineered in as a safety measure.
You don’t need to reset anything but you can disconnect battery for say an hour if you want to do it.
The various components of the speed sensors can gather dirt from the road and from the dust that is generated by constant sharp braking. Speed sensors need to be cleaned on a regular basis to avoid damaging the anti-lock braking system.
Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement Cost – RepairPal Estimate. Labor costs are estimated between $106 and $133 while parts are priced between $144 and $162. This range does not include taxes and fees, and does not factor in your specific vehicle or unique location. Related repairs may also be needed.
If the vehicle detects a problem with the boost pressure, then it will go into limp mode. If you are getting limp mode at lower speeds or while your car is idling, you are generally not having a boost problem. Check your memory before doing your own troubleshooting and repairing of the limp mode in your vehicle.
Your vehicle may rumble or idle irregularly when you start it, or it may burn more fuel than normal. Also, your vehicle may lose power suddenly due to wrong signals sent from the speed sensor to the fuel system.
