Typically, Toyota releases their newest model year trucks and SUVs, like 4Runner and Tundra and Tacoma and Highlander, near the end of the year. Often this timeline begins with September and runs until the end of the calendar year. The 2022 4Runner is currently expected to launch around September time frame.Apr 13, 2021
For the 2022 model year, every trim level of the Toyota 4Runner will get new safety technology. The 4Runner lineup will also gain a new trim level that emphasizes on-road performance. And the off-road-oriented TRD Pro model will offer a wild new color option.
Likewise, the 4Runner hasn’t been redesigned since 2010, but this will soon change according to a new report by MotorTrend. To reduce costs and streamline production, the new Tacoma and 4Runner will reportedly share the same global platform as the next-generation Toyota Hilux and Fortuner.
Also included are keyless entry with push-button start, air conditioning, fabric seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, and cruise control. A power rear liftgate and a leather-wrapped tilt-telescopic steering wheel are standard.
Why are used Toyota 4Runners so expensive? The 4Runner has an excellent reputation for durability, reliability and longevity. It’s a solid machine with impressive off-road chops. As such, even high-mileage models are in high demand, which pushes the price up.
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner offers Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert standard on most trims. The SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, and Limited offer BSM and RCTA.
The most reliable Toyota 4Runner model year from the fourth generation is 2008. The 2008 Toyota 4Runner is recommended by Vehicle History. In addition, the 2008 4Runner earned the Dependability Award from J.D. Power.
That’s actually ok. Because, as it turns out, the 4Runner is made to last for more than 200,000-miles. In fact, according to iSee Cars, approximately 0.2% of 4Runner models will last for more than 300,000-miles.
What is the difference? The TRD Off-Road trim for the 4Runner takes the standard features of the SR5 and builds on them. While it does include the standard navigation system of the SR5 Premium, otherwise the TRD Off-Road has all of the same features as the base SR5.
Poor MPG
Another issue created by the 4Runner’s weight and outdated five-speed transmission is EPA-estimated fuel economy figures that seem equally dated: 16/19/17 mpg city/highway/combined for the rear-wheel-drive version.
Model | Approximate Price Range | Vehicle Type |
---|---|---|
Ford Bronco | $30K – $65K | Body-on Frame SUV 4X4 |

Many owners have complained about issues in the front brake calipers and front brakes, warping problems, and premature wear in the front brake rotor and brake master cylinder. Fourth generation 4Runners are notorious for brake problems, especially the 2003-2005 model years.
Japan
All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota’s plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
The 4Runner continues to be built in Japan and still get body-on-frame construction, meaning it does not ride like any other SUV, but nor does it come with the shudder and bounce sometimes found on a pickup. It’s entirely unique for its size — not too big and not too small.
Toyota used to have an FAQ answer on their website that said approximately 1000 TRD Pro 4Runner’s were made per model year, equally distributed between the colors so 333ish per color per year.
The 2022 Toyota Sequoia could have an exterior design that draws on the Toyota RAV4 with thinner headlights and taillights. It could also gain a larger, more aggressive grille with LED headlights and running lights. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a new front and rear bumper design too.

Typically, putting 10,000 to 12,000 miles on your car per year is normal. A car that is driven more than that is considered high-mileage, i.e. a three year old car with more than 45,000 miles on the clock would be considered high mileage.
Appearance. While at first glance the 2021 4Runner and the 2021 Land Cruiser look very similar, once you take a good look, you’ll notice that the Land Cruiser is taller, wider, and longer than the 4Runner. However, the 4Runner comes in nine trims, whereas the Land Cruiser only offers two.
Toyota 4Runner
As far as large SUVs go, the Toyota 4Runner had the worst score of any tested by NHTSA in the rollover category. The 2017 model-year 4Runner had 24.6% risk of tipping over in both all-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive models.
Toyota 4Runners are so expensive because they are reliable, long-lasting, and don’t cost much to maintain. These attributes mean that there is high demand for the 4Runner which naturally pushes prices up. Used 4Runners are expensive because they hold their value so well.
