There were increases in population and the number of average miles driven. Even with price increases, non-seasonal demand was also higher. So, that’s it. That’s why gas was $3 last year.

The main reason for the price hike was record highs in crude oil prices, Lundberg said. The area with the highest average gas prices was Stockton, Calif., which posted $4.41 per gallon.
The average gas price in the U.S. was $3.378 per gallon as of Oct. 21, according to data from GasBuddy. But that average conceals a pretty wide spread among the 50 states. Oklahoma has the lowest average gas price among states at $2.982 per gallon, GasBuddy data shows.

The EIA’s November STEO sees Brent spot prices averaging $71.59 per barrel this year and $71.91 per barrel next year. In its previous October STEO, the EIA projected that Brent spot prices would average $71.38 per barrel in 2021 and $71.91 per barrel in 2022.

Gas price fluctuations in recent years
In light of plummeting crude oil prices, U.S. regular retail prices of gasoline fell to 2.43 in 2015 and a record low of 2.14 in 2016.
The price of a gallon of milk is often included in statistics about the costs of living over certain years, and in November of 2009, the average price of a gallon of whole milk was $3.03, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
On Thursday, the nation’s average price for regular gasoline stood at $3.388 a gallon, up 21 cents from last month and up nearly $1.25 from a year ago, GasBuddy data show. The highest recorded average for the U.S. as a whole was set on July 16, 2008 at $4.103.

Pushed higher by the increased cost of crude oil, Floridians are now paying $1.23 per gallon more for gas than they did at this time last year. “Gas prices have been dragged higher by skyrocketing crude oil prices,” AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said in a release.
