horsepower, the common unit of power; i.e., the rate at which work is done. In the British Imperial System, one horsepower equals 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute—that is, the power necessary to lift a total mass of 33,000 pounds one foot in one minute.
Right between 200 and 300 is a good amount of horsepower for a car. Many base models from some brands offer between 100 and 200 horsepower, suitable for drivers who do not mind a more relaxed driving experience in exchange for a better economy.
The constant 1 horsepower equals 550 foot-pounds per second. In other words, 1 horsepower is the amount of work required to move a load of 550 pounds over 1 foot, in 1 second.
300hp, or horsepower, is not considerably significant. However, It’s plenty of power for most applications! For a sports car, 300hp is a great benchmark, showing that a car will be lots of fun. This means the engine is serious about performance, and likely consumes lots of fuel.
40 hp is about equal to what you can get out of aftermarket parts bolted to a fronty 4.0 short of a supercharger. It’s an easily noticeable difference.
Horsepower is undeniably attractive, and these days even the most basic vehicles have the horsepower necessary to pass most vehicles on the highway. As such, horsepower under 200 can be quite good. This level is sufficient for drivers who don’t actively seek road thrills.

When considering human-powered equipment, a healthy human can produce about 1.2 hp (0.89 kW) briefly (see orders of magnitude) and sustain about 0.1 hp (0.075 kW) indefinitely; trained athletes can manage up to about 2.5 hp (1.9 kW) briefly and 0.35 hp (0.26 kW) for a period of several hours.
For a general runabout 60-70 bhp in a small car is fine but a larger car that may be used for carrying loads, towing a trailer or for going any distance then a 2.0 plus engine with around 120-150 bhp would be better.
The horsepower rating of an engine is usually measured on a dynamometer, which is a form of mechanical brake used to apply variable loads to a running engine so that torque and power may be calculated at different engine revs – hence brake horsepower (which is always quoted at a given RPM).
Is 180 bhp fast? Ability to go fast is based on the power to weight ratio. A 180 horsepower bike would be very fast. A two ton car with 180 horsepower would be just average.
It’s clear that a lighter car requires less force to accelerate than a heavier one. With a heavier car of the same power you have to accelerate for longer to cover the same distance so you use more fuel.
The heavier the vehicle is, the more energy it needs to get moving. Heavier vehicles have greater inertia and greater rolling resistance, which both contribute to increased fuel consumption. Reducing weight is a very effective way to improve a vehicle’s efficiency (RMI 2011).
Horse power doesn’t matter with the weight of the car. It is the power of the engine.

A 10% increase in power to weight ratio would be noticeable. A keen driver might notice 5%. You have to use a relative increase… 20hp starting at 100hp is huge, but going from 300hp to 320hp won’t make much of a difference.
For some smaller cars, 200 to 250 horsepower is a solid amount.
