The V12 engine is currently used to power the current 760i xDrive, and it’s pretty great. It makes a buttery-smooth 577 horsepower (down from 602, due to emissions changes) and 590 pound-feet of torque. It’s everything you’d want in a giant luxo-barge, and apparently, BMW’s customers agree.
That’s unfortunate since the V12 is part of BMW’s history. Its elimination is motivated by increasingly higher emission standards compliance costs. As a result, the engine in the M760Li is BMW’s latest V12. It will therefore disappear in 2023, when the next generation of the 7 Series will arrive.

BMW is well known for its history of inline-six (straight-six) engines, a layout it continues to use to this day despite most other manufacturers switching to a V6 layout. The more common inline-four and V8 layouts are also produced by BMW, and at times the company has produced inline-three, V10 and V12 engines.

V12 engine has the benefit of running at lower RPM’s but the weight of the engine is greater compared to a V8. In the other hand V8 engines have a higher compression ratio and higher RPM’s. This is the main reason behind the faster speed of V8 engine.
