Know that if you have a hand-operated siphon pump, it may take a few tries before the gas starts to flow. If you own a mechanical pump, siphoning gas from a car may be as easy as inserting the tubing and flipping a switch.

Method 1 of 2: Using two tubes to siphon gas
In this method, two lengths of flexible rubber tubing are used to siphon gas into a fuel-safe container. A gas can works well as a fuel-safe container because it can be closed and won’t allow the fuel vapors to escape.
Regular gasoline has a shelf life of three to six months, while diesel can last up to a year before it begins to degrade. On the other hand, organic-based Ethanol can lose its combustibility in just one to three months due to oxidation and evaporation. Tracking the age of the fuel in your tank can be a challenge.
Use a garden hose that is at least six feet in length. Anything shorter will not be long enough to allow gravity to push the gasoline through the hose.
An anti-siphon faucet or valve is installed to prevent the backflow of dirty water into the clean water source. People use anti-siphon taps for outdoor plumbing, utility sinks, and mainly where a hose is attached to supply water outside of a home.
Stick the siphon hose into the tank and the other end into a fuel canister. Remember that siphons are one-way devices so make sure you put the right side of the hose into the tank. Squeeze the valve and it will suction the gas out of the tank and into your canister.
Posing as maintenance personnel and tapping a pump’s metering system to release fuel. Stealing directly from the underground tanks at service stations: a driver positions a truck with a hole drilled in its floor over the tank, pries off the tank cover, and inserts a pump that can gulp hundreds of gallons.
Ideally, store your car in a climate-controlled facility. Fill the gas tank completely full. An empty or low gas tank will lead to internal rust as condensation and moisture builds within the tank.
Overfilling the gas tank can cause liquid gas to enter the charcoal canister, or carbon filter, which is designed only for vapor. Gas in the system can affect your car’s performance by causing it to run poorly, and damage the engine, he says.
Habitually running the car to empty could lead to fuel pump damage and a repair potentially costing hundreds or even thousands in parts and labor. Filling up can be painful when prices are high, but it is an investment that will protect your vehicle and save you more time and money down the road.
Safety precautions. We do not recommend attempting to siphon by yourself as fumes from gasoline or diesel can cause dizziness and even fainting. The last thing you want is to black out with liters of a flammable substance flowing out of your car and onto the floor.
Degradation occurs from the get-go but most gas stays fresh for a month or two without issue. However, gas that is more than two month old is generally OK to use with only minor decreases in performance. Gas that is older than a year can cause issues, like engine knocking, sputtering and clogged injectors.
“Gas can start to go bad in as little as just three months because the lighter, more volatile components of gasoline evaporate over time,” says John Ibbotson, Consumer Reports’ chief automotive services manager at the Auto Test Center. Using old fuel in your car can sap engine power, causing hesitation and stalling.
