A – Distance from the center of the front U-joint to the center of the rear U-joint. Take this U-joint center-to-center measurement with the slip yoke in its operating position. The slip yoke operating position is typically determined by pulling the slip yoke out of the transmission 1” after it’s fully bottomed out.
If the driveshaft is too long then this movement is impeded, and the driveshaft bottoms out in the extension housing against the output shaft.. You might be able to get rid of some of the vibration by adjusting the pinion angle of the differential..
DD: The slip yoke should be able to go into the tailshaft of the transmission so the barrel is fully inside the seal. Then, pull out the yoke 1 inch. This is the correct amount of spline contact for the slip yoke.
3/4″ of rotational play, or slack measured at the outside edge of the u-joint flange? I would say that is fairly normal, but if you are having noise from the rear end, I would be pulling the cover off and have a look inside. Remember, it could be coming from a worn wheel bearing too.
Spline count, seal diameter and length will identify the slip yoke that is required for your transmission.
Inside Lock U-Joints are measured from the grooves in the caps where the C-clips fit not the overall width of the U-Joint like the outside lock type. On the left is a Pinion Yoke and UJ for inside lock. The C-clips are facing up to photograph.
As Rick said, measure the outside diameter of the carrier side bearing’s outer race. In addition, there should be some part numbers on the old bearings. Those numbers can be crossed over to a replacement set/kit also. With the 28 spline 9″ you’re probably running the small OD bearings anyway.
A vehicle’s track, or track width, is the distance between the center line of each of the two wheels on the same axle on any given vehicle.
The wheelbase of any vehicle is the distance between the centre of the front wheels and the centre of the rear wheels.
Well-known member. My local truck shop, Margot Inc., said that DOT will not allow a driveshaft longer than 68 inches without a carrier bearing.
For safe and stable operation, the slip yoke and spline should maintain at least 2 inches of engagement at all times.

The yoke is the old Roman jugerum, about 25 ares or 0.625 acres. … This comes to 0.5755 hectares or about 1.422 acres. The plural is Joche.
Instruct your friend to place the end of the measuring tape at the place where your shoulder meets the top of your arm, or, the boniest part of your shoulder. From there, holding the tape taut, they should stretch the tape straight across to the tip of your other shoulder blade.
Rotational play like that is perfectly normal. That’s due to the required slop (backlash) between the gears so they receive adequate lubrication between them.
