Once the top dead center timing mark is lined up with the marker on the engine, the motor should now be at top dead center. To verify, shine the flashlight down into the spark plug hole. You should be able to see the top of the piston clearly near the top of the cylinder.

This usually involves slowly and gently stepping down on the kickstart lever and pushing down until the compression stroke is just about to cycle the engine over. This comes with a bit of feel for each bike, but you should know when you are close with a little bit of practice.
How can you tell the difference between an exhaust stroke and a compression stroke? Compression stroke happens after the intake valve closes. Exhaust stroke happens with the exhaust valve open. Just think about how an engine works and watch both the valves and the piston.

Shine a flashlight on the lower crankshaft pulley, just behind the belt. The pulley bolts to the harmonic balancer, which is directly attached to the crankshaft. A series of timing marks is scribed onto the balancer and one mark is labeled TDC. Locate this mark and highlight it with a paint pen.
Ensure the piston is at the bottom of the cylinder. Measure the distance of the cylinder from the piston at the bottom to the top. This distance the piston travels gives you the cylinder stroke.
Watch what position the valves are in and turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until the piston is on TDC on the compression stroke. You will have marks on your cam gears and also in the timing hole to line up and once you have them all lined up and on the compression stroke you will be at TDC.
You can determine if it is 180 out by removing #1 plug and placing your finger/thumb over the hole. (Temporarily remove the wire from the coil first) Have someone “tap” the starter and you will feel pressure trying to to blow your finger away. This is the compression stroke. Note the direction of engine rotation.
you need to put a socket in the crankshaft hole cap and turn it anticlockwise only while looking into the timing hole cap looking to line up the t mark with the index mark(the t mark looks like a sideways T . there is more than one mark in there)if you turn too far ,dont turn back only turn anticlockwise!
