Economic downturns increase volatility
U.S. gasoline prices peaked at 3.62 U.S. dollars per gallon in 2012.
California continues to top the nation’s most expensive markets at $4.62 a gallon, followed by Hawaii ($4.33), Nevada ($3.95), Washington ($3.87), Oregon ($3.77), Utah ($3.72), Alaska ($3.71), Idaho ($3.69), Washington, D.C. ($3.61) and Illinois ($3.60).

On Thursday, the nation’s average price for regular gasoline stood at $3.388 a gallon, up 21 cents from last month and up nearly $1.25 from a year ago, GasBuddy data show. The highest recorded average for the U.S. as a whole was set on July 16, 2008 at $4.103.
The last time an individual gas station sold fuel for less than $1 was in 2016 in Iowa, according to GasBuddy. The national average last held that level in 1999, U.S. government data show.
